Orchidstudium
is a nonprofit organization.
The Orchidstudium Project connects researchers and collectors of
orchids for the purpose of extending and spreading the knowledge of
these plants. We start with the Brazilian native species, but see the
potential of this expanding to cover much more.
The existing bibliography of the almost 3000 native Brazilian orchid
species is quite old, incomplete, and spread thru many volumes and
resources. The main project goal of the Orchidstudium is the
publication of an online Orchids Photographic Encyclopedia that can be
accessed with the Photos menu link, covering an updated list of
Brazilian orchids and their taxonomy. To date, this information has
never been compiled in a single publication or resource.
The Encyclopedia is designed to be a fast and practical tool for
identification of orchid species and includes up to date nomenclatural
changes.
The genera and their species are presented with detailed photographs,
presenting as much information as available about each individual
species. The species with completed detailed photographs can be
accessed thru the Photostudy menu link.
During the course of the research the project interested many
collaborators, to whom we thank for their inestimable contributions.
Without them we certainly would not be capable of completing this work.
We wish to express our gratitude to all those who helped make this site
better. Many friends joined us over the years to make the Orchidstudium
Project a reality. Friends have sent and continue to send plants
or photographs for study. Others suggest corrections, make comments,
and others provided incentive and encouragement, and others support us
with their prestige.
We thank Patricia Harding for her suggestions and the English language
editing of the texts inside this website.
