Carriella V.P.Castro & K.G.Lacerda, Icon. Orchid. Brasil. 2: t. 123. (2006).
Baptistonia sect. Carriella (V.P.Castro & K.G.Lacerda) Chiron, Richardiana 8(3): 123 (2008).
Baptistonia sect. Crassicalla Chiron, Richardiana 8(3): 124 (2008).
Baptistonia sect. Emarginata Chiron, Richardiana 8(3): 123  (2008).
Baptistonia sect. Laevicalla Chiron, Richardiana 8(3): 124 (2008).
Baptistonia sect. Lamellaticalla Chiron, Richardiana 8(3): 123 (2008).

Alliances have been proposed based in morphology and affinity to facilitate the correct identification of species.

Note:
Baptistonia species usually presents cylindrical
(cigar-like) short or elongated pseudobulbs; semi-connate lateral sepals, except B. colorata that has free ones; long or short erect, arched or pendent inflorescences (paniculate or raceme rachis).

The three descriptions enhanced with lilac color represents species that have front of anther cap with only a rostrum (without two lateral appendixes).

Most of species in this gallery have additional pictures showing vegetative aspects, flower analysis and other topics about anatomy and morphology of flowers that can be accessed on PHOTOSTUDY link.

********

B. cornigera Alliance
(2 species)

Species presenting two longitudinal blocks of distinct callosities on the lip; intermediate lobe without callosities.

Species presenting 2 big proximal horns => Baptistonia cornigera,

Species presenting large flowers resembling old Oncidium Sect. Crispa (now Brasilidium) => Baptistonia sarcodes.

B. silvana Alliance
(1 species)

Species presenting three longitudinal blocks of distinct callosities on the lip extending over intermediate lobe; no horned callosities; front of anther cap presenting two pubescent appendixes; flowers predominantly orange-reddish.

B. nitida Alliance
(1 species)

Species presenting three longitudinal blocks of distinct bright callosities extending over intermediate lobe; no horned callosities; short triangular lateral lobes always arranged obliquely to longitudinal median line; front of anther cap presenting only one short rostrum; flowers predominantly yellow.

B. pubes Alliance
(2 complexes; 4 species)

Species presenting four longitudinal blocks of distinct bright callosities extending over intermediate lobe (the second block from the basis always short horned); flower's lip basis with a medium size unguicle; plane or down-arched narrow lateral lobes always arranged perpendicularly to longitudinal median line; long narrow isthmus (between lateral lobes and intermediate lobe); front of anther cap presenting two appendixes.

Baptistonia pubes Complex
(2 species)

Species presenting a ligular very narrow down-arched lateral lobes.

Baptistonia cruciata Complex
(2 species)

Species presenting
plain narrow lateral lobes => B. cruciata.

Species presenting plain large lateral lobes => B. gutfreundiana.

B. brieniana Alliance
(2 complexes; 4 species)

Species presenting four longitudinal blocks of distinct callosities or scale indistinct callosities extending over intermediate lobe (the second series from the basis always short horned); flower's lip basis with a medium size unguicle; plane or up-arched large lateral lobes; short isthmus (only a strangulation or waist) between lateral lobes and intermediate lobe) with toothed border; front of anther cap presenting two appendixes.

Baptistonia brieniana Complex
(2 species)

Species presenting medium size or large usually plain lateral lobes; scale indistinct callosities.

Species presenting medium size lateral lobes => B. brieniana.

Species presenting large size lateral lobes => B. leinigii.

Baptistonia riograndense Complex
(2 species)

Species presenting medium size unguicle in basis; large oblique lateral lobes; isthmus with toothed border; distinct longitudinal blocks of callosities extending over intermediate lobe (callus in the middle point superposed).

B. widgrenii Alliance
(1 species)

Species presenting long unguicle in basis; indistinct series of very verrucose longitudinal callosities regularly arranged extending over intermediate lobe; medium size basis unguicle; lateral lobes up-arched obliquely arranged to longitudinal median line; front of anther cap presenting two pubescent appendixes.

B. velteniana Alliance
(1 species)

Species presenting scale and thorn callosities irregularly mixed extending over intermediate lobe; plane triangular lateral lobes.

B. uhlii Alliance
(1 species)

Species presenting very short lateral lobes; elevated triangular clinandrium; front of anther cap presenting two long narrow appendixes.

B. truncata Alliance
(2 species)

Species presenting short ligular lateral lobes; intermediate lobe always sub-quadratic.

Species without horn callosities;  front of anther cap presenting two short appendixes; flowers predominantly yellow => B. kautskyi.
